The military education system in Russia began to take shape under Peter the Great with the opening of the Navigation School in Moscow in 1701. The first army cadet corps was opened in St. Petersburg in 1732 by decree of Empress Anna Ioannovna. As military historian A.V. Viskovaty wrote, it was "the cradle of glory for many heroes and famous men of Russia." These words are equally applicable to other Russian military educational institutions.

This book contains the memoirs of alumni of 19th-century military academies—the reigns of Alexander I, Nicholas I, and Alexander II. The memoirs of former cadets, midshipmen, and military cadets paint a picture of the upbringing and education of future officers of the Russian army against the backdrop of major historical events. The vast majority of these memoirs are scattered across the pages of periodicals from the 19th century, making them inaccessible not only to the general public but also to most historians.
