This book is dedicated to the life and multifaceted work of the Lithuanian educator and military chaplain Liudvikas Rhesa, one of the leading humanities scholars of the first half of the 19th century. Much attention is given to a special period in Rhesa's life, when he served as a chaplain in the Prussian army. The book draws on the war diaries of Liudvikas Rhesa. This work draws on the research of numerous scholars and writers from Lithuania, Germany, and Russia over the past 100 years. We hope this book will allow readers to gain a deeper understanding of the history of the Kaliningrad region (formerly East Prussia) and the university, to immerse themselves in the eventful period of the Russian army and its allies' campaign in Europe, to follow the path of a young scholar in the early 19th century from a poor student to the head of the university, and to become acquainted with the creative process of one of the greatest translators, theologians, editors, publishers, and poets.
The book is addressed to lovers of literature and military history, librarians, historians and philologists, literature teachers, local historians, and students of humanities.
