Published for the first time, these memoirs by Lieutenant General Pyotr Semyonovich Makhrov (1876–1964), a prominent figure in the White movement in southern Russia and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the General Staff in southern Russia under Generals A.I. Denikin and P.N. Wrangel, provide a broad panorama of the 1917–1920 era, vividly reflecting the events of World War I and the revolutionary upheavals of the autumn of 1917 and early 1918 on the Southwestern Front, life in Ukraine under Hetman P.P. Skoropadsky in 1918, and the Civil War in southern Russia in 1919–1920.

This publication is based on a manuscript from the collection of the Bakhmetev Archive of Russian and East European History and Culture at Columbia University.
