Nikolay Mikhailovich Amosov is a world-famous doctor, known for his heart surgeries and unique methods of prolonging life. On the very first day of the Great Patriotic War, he volunteered for the army and was appointed a surgeon in a field hospital. In incredibly difficult conditions, doctors saved the wounded in the battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, in Ukraine, Hungary, Germany, and then were sent to the Far East and participated in the war with Japan. In his book, N. M. Amosov shows the war as it was seen through the eyes of doctors. Suffering, courage, dirt and blood; the tragic and sometimes comical sides of the war are presented inseparably, as it was in reality. The memoirs are full of deep reflections on Stalin's time, on the essence of Stalinism, on the Soviet system as a whole, on its transformation up to the complete collapse during "perestroika".
