Artilleryman and military engineer Captain Peter Henry Bruce (1692–1757) left behind memoirs spanning forty years of his life, thirteen of which (1711–1724) he spent in Russia during the turbulent era of Peter the Great's reforms. Born in Brandenburg, he served in the Prussian army, then, at the invitation of his relative, Yakov Bruce (Peter's associate and Russian General-Master of the Field), transferred to the Russian army. He participated in the Pruth campaign, witnessed the assassination of Tsarevich Alexei, served as a tutor to Peter the Great's grandson, Grand Duke Peter Alexeevich, participated in the campaign against the Swedes, and, at the Tsar's behest, described the shores of the Caspian Sea and compiled a detailed map. Leaving Russia with the rank of captain, Bruce went to Scotland, and after some time traveled to the West Indies, where he built two forts. He returned home in 1745. The notes recount his life, full of wanderings and adventures, and represent a valuable historical source that significantly enhances our understanding of the most important period in the formation of Peter I's imperial system.
