In the "long" eighteenth century, understood as a historical rather than a calendar period, the combination of new consumer expectations and a new level of industriousness led to a fundamental transformation of the material cultures of northwestern Europe and North America. This "revolution of industriousness" created the conditions of economic acceleration that are associated with the Industrial Revolution. This volume offers a rational explanation of the new nature of consumer goods and the actual consumer behavior of households at all levels of financial affluence. The author examines the impact of the origin and evolution of consumer demand on the process of economic development through the prism of consumer behavior taken in the context of household economics. It analyzes the changing consumer goals of households from the 17th century to the present day and how the decisions of specific households have become the link between macroeconomic growth and the improvement of human nature. Finally, this study identifies the main strengths and weaknesses of existing consumption theory and proposes appropriate amendments, adding historical realism to economic abstractions.
