Battlecruisers—the Royal Navy's "strategic cavalry"—became the favorite ships of the British public and press. The British believed that these imposing, beautiful, and swift ships, personifying the nation's naval might, were destined for great deeds.

The first British battlecruisers—HMS Invincible, HMS Inflexible, and HMS Indomitable—were launched in 1907. Over the next ten years, between the laying of the first and last battlecruisers, their designs underwent rapid development, accelerated by the events of World War I.

Battlecruisers took part in all the major naval battles and, as a rule, found themselves in the thick of the fighting. This was the case at the Falkland Islands, Heligoland, Dogger Bank, and the Battle of Jutland...
