Richard Henry Tawney (1880-1962) was an outstanding representative of English political economy, historian and social activist, whose ideas had a significant impact on state-building in post-war Britain. His Religion and the Rise of Capitalism is a seminal work of economic history, dealing with the complex interplay between religious dogma and socio-economic practices in Western European countries (primarily England) of the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Drawing on a wealth of empirical material, Tawney shows what changes religious thought underwent as capitalist relations developed and how, in turn, these relations were legitimized and justified by Christian theology. From the study of historical matter, the author moves on to analyze the moral foundations of Western society contemporary to him, paying particular attention to the tragic gap between the ethics of social responsibility and the dominant economic practices. These reflections of Richard Henry Tawney, who consistently advocated the humanization of economic relations, seem to be of great importance for our time and probably for the future.
