Early 17th century. A Dutch ship is wrecked off the coast of Japan. The surviving crew members are captured and accused of piracy. Among the captured was an Englishman, John Blackthorne, who has an excellent knowledge of geography, military science and mathematics and a strong character. Their fate must be decided by the local ruler, whose arrival the whole village awaits. Rumors of the talented captain reach Prince Toranaga no Minowara, one of the most powerful men in Japan. Toranaga takes Blackthorne under his protection, planning to use his knowledge in a power struggle. To survive in a foreign land, the Englishman learns its language and customs and becomes a samurai, but he never gives up the thought that someday he will be able to return to his homeland.
