"Ada, or Joy" (1969) is the pinnacle achievement of Vladimir Nabokov (1899- 1977), the largest and most significant of his novels, reflecting half a century of literary and scholarly experience as a bilingual writer. Written in the form of a family chronicle spanning a century and a half and a long line of characters, it represents perhaps the most extraordinary love story ever told in any language. "Tragic separations, reckless rendezvous, and an intoxicating finale on the tenth decade" of the cosmopolitan existence of the two protagonists, Van and Ada, are set against the backdrop of epochal events taking place on distant Antithera, which is gradually taking on earthly features, refracted by the writer's magic crystal. The novel is published in a new translation prepared by Andrei Babikov, with commentary by the translator.
