Apikuni - the Distant White Shirt - this name was given by the Blackfeet Indians to the writer James Willard Schultz (1859-1947), who lived among them for a long time, traded with them, studied their history, beliefs and customs, was married to a girl from the Piegan tribe. Schultz's books open readers a window into the world of the Indians of the Old West, the world of hunters, warriors, travelers, witch doctors, the world of primordial nature - the world of the Apikuni.
One of the best works of J. W. Schultz is rightly considered an autobiographical book, known to readers under the title "My Life Among the Indians". On its pages, the author tells not only about the memorable days of his youth, but also transmits stories known to him from the words of Indian friends and white old-timers of Montana, vividly describes the colorful life and manners of the times of the Wild West. He writes of the life he led "as an Indian": that is the exact title of his book, My Indian Life. The new edition restored significant fragments of the text, released in previous publications, clarified many domestic and ethnographic details. The book is provided with modern commentaries and documentary appendices, and in addition, a complete series of classic illustrations by the famous artists F. Weigold, D. Miller, and L. M. Goldberg are reproduced here.
