This edition contains the last two major works of Vladimir Nabokov's European period, written in Paris before his departure for America in 1940. Both had a decisive influence on the writer's subsequent English-language work. The story "The Wizard" (1939) was Nabokov's first attempt to expound the theme of "Lolita"; the novel "Solus Rex" (1940) was an approximation to the conception of "Pale Fire." Regretting the incompleteness of "Solus Rex", Nabokov noted that "in its coloring, in its stylistic scope and abundance, in something indefinable in its powerful undercurrent, it promised to be decisively different from all my other Russian works". The Appendix contains an excerpt from the archival typewritten text of "Solus Rex," which was excluded from the Paris journal publication.
