This edition comprises Vladimir Nabokov's last two major works from his European period, written in Paris before his departure for America in 1940. Both had a decisive influence on all of the writer's subsequent English-language work. The novella "The Magician" (1939) is Nabokov's first attempt to explore the theme of "Lolita," while the novella "Solus Rex" (1940) is an approximation of the concept of "Pale Fire." Regretting the unfinished nature of "Solus Rex," Nabokov remarked that "in its coloring, its stylistic scope and abundance, in something indefinable in its powerful underlying current, it promised to be decisively different from all my other Russian works." The Appendix contains an excerpt from the archival typescript of "Solus Rex," excluded from the Parisian magazine publication.
