V. A. Rozhdestvensky (1895–1977) was a renowned poet, translator, essayist, and literary critic, one of those masters of words who stood at the origins of the Russian, particularly the Leningrad, school of poetic translation (K. I. Chukovsky, S. Ya. Marshak, M. L. Lozinsky, I. G. Ehrenburg, and others).
Belonging to the younger generation of Acmeists and a member of the Third Guild of Poets, along with G. Ivanov and G. Adamovich, Vsevolod Rozhdestvensky developed as a poet and translator under the direct influence of N. Gumilyov and other outstanding poets of the Silver Age—A. Blok, M. Kuzmin, and F. Sologub, with whom he actively participated in the large-scale translation of foreign literary works into Russian following the establishment of the renowned Vsevolod Literature publishing house in Petrograd, initiated by M. Gorky. Beginning in the 1920s and throughout the following decades, V. A. Rozhdestvensky's translations of works by leading Western European poets were published: François Villon, Pierre-Jacques Béranger, A. Chénier, V. Hugo, P. Verhaeren, J. Byron, W. B. Yeats, H. Heine, F. Schiller, J. W. Goethe, and many others.

This anthology includes poems by 19th- and 20th-century French poets, published for the first time, in V. A. Rozhdestvensky's remarkably accurate and highly artistic translations, with parallel texts in the original language.

This publication commemorates the 130th anniversary of the poet and translator's birth and is addressed to a wide range of readers interested in and fond of poetry.
