On September 20, 2019, the MOSAiC expedition, led by researcher Markus Rex, launched. It became the largest in history. Researchers from 20 countries took part in it. Their goal was to understand how the climate of our planet is changing, because this is most noticeable on the Arctic ice. The German icebreaker Polarstern was the flagship of the expedition. Russian scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) and the Russian vessels Akademik Treshnikov, Akademik Fedorov and Kapitan Dranitsyn also took part in the study.
The Polarstern drifted with the ice floe for a whole year, and the expedition route almost completely repeated the path of the famous Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen on the ship Fram. During their time away from civilization, the participants encountered many serious problems: cracks in the ice, strong snowstorms, bone-chilling cold, impenetrable darkness, polar bears... All this did not stop the scientists from shedding light on the global process of climate change.
