No one came closer to conquering the Atlantic in a hot air balloon than two Englishmen—37-year-old engineer Donald Cameron and Major Christopher Davey. On Wednesday, July 26, 1978, their bright yellow balloon, the "Zanussi," nearly 50 meters in diameter, soared into the sky over the Canadian island of Newfoundland. The red, four-and-a-half-meter-long gondola, shaped like a lifeboat, could rescue the crew in the event of an emergency landing. Although the balloon was forced to land just 100 kilometers short of its destination, the flight became an example of the expedition's meticulous technical, organizational, and psychological preparation.
