The travel journals of British ship's surgeon John Mortlock-Thronson recount the events of 1854-1856, which he witnessed and participated in while aboard the Royal Navy steam sloop HMS Barracuda. John Thronson shares his impressions of the unknown lands and peoples living on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in the mid-19th century—including the British colony of Hong Kong, Shanghai in China, and Busan in Korea and its environs—and devotes particular attention to the indigenous peoples who still inhabit Russia's Far Eastern territories.
The book also devotes significant space to the events of the Crimean War in the Pacific Ocean (1853-1856). This includes attacks on the Russian ports of Petropavlovsk, Ayan, and Okhotsk, the capture of Urup Island, and the Bremen brig Greta, carrying sailors from the frigate Diana, which was wrecked in the Japanese harbor of Shimoda. The author describes diplomatic negotiations between the Queen's plenipotentiary representatives and Japanese officials, as well as the daily life and customs of Japan in the first months after the country's opening to foreign trade.
During the Crimean War, British ships were engaged in mapping the Sea of Japan; they were the first European powers to chart the outlines of many bays and inlets on the western shore of the Sea of Japan. One such bay, in particular, was named Meya Bay, now called the Golden Horn, on whose shores the city of Vladivostok now stands.
John Tronson's travel notes, published in London in 1859 and widely acclaimed, are an important historical document, cited by early Russian and foreign researchers in the late 19th century. They are the first fully translated into Russian and supplemented by an Index of Names, a List of Ships, and Notes.
