The Naxalite uprising in India is one of the still-living People's Wars of modern times. In the late 1960s, when communists entered state governments in India, the long-awaited leftward turn in the country of castes was not in sight. On the contrary, party workers colluded with the government.

In response, a guerrilla movement arose in the small village of Naxalbari, declaring a People's War against the landlords and imperialists. This movement became so ingrained in society, among peasants, the poor, and lower castes, that the government has been unable to eradicate it—even after 50 years.

This book is an attempt to shed light on current events—those events where young people are heading into the jungle, rifles slung over their shoulders, waging guerrilla warfare, and raising the red flag.
