Fernando Aramburu wrote the novel "Homeland" after the Basque terrorist group ETA declared an end to armed conflict. He says he felt a pressing need to understand what happened to people during this tragic period, why murder and violence evoked support or sympathy in many, while those who disagreed remained fearfully silent. Refusing to play the role of judge, Aramburu uses two Basque families as examples to essentially tell the recent history of an entire people. This is a novel about love and hate, friendship and betrayal, faith and despair. In recent decades, no book in Spain has received as many awards as Aramburu's "Homeland." The novel was named best book of the year and received the National Literature Prize, the Critics' Prize, the International Journalists' Club Award, and the Italian Strega and Lampedusa Prizes. Its total circulation has already exceeded one million. In 2020, a television version of the novel (8 episodes) will be released on screens, filmed by HBO.
