Friction within Hitler's movement between supporters of nationalism and socialism led to the bloody massacre unleashed by Hitler on June 30, 1934, known as the Night of the Long Knives. The entire SA top brass led by Ernst Röhm was liquidated, Gregor Strasser, former Reich Chancellor, Kurt von Schleicher and Gustav von Kahr, who had suppressed the Munich "beer putsch" ten years earlier, were assassinated. Hitler needed different people to accomplish his new goals. Max Gallo created a masterpiece of documentary fiction devoted to the ominous events of those years, the scale of this gothic panorama shocks with dark and cruel color.
