Soviet writer and journalist Mikhail Petrovich Loskutov (1906–1941), born in Kursk, participated in the Moscow–Karakum–Moscow motor rally in the 1930s, later describing the expedition in his stories. The text of his book, "Stories of the Desert and Roads," is accompanied by photographs by another participant in the rally, Max Prekhner.
This book offers a rare opportunity to see not only the ceremonial, official side of a difficult expedition, but also the daily, persistent work of a large number of people united by the goal of overcoming the "black sands" and studying the endurance of both equipment and man.
This collection includes several cycles of stories by Mikhail Loskutov, including "Ashgabat Nights," "Journey to Forty Hills," "Zeagli Halt," "Stories of the Desert and Roads," and the novella "The Thirteenth Caravan," about the journeys in Renault Sahara automobiles to the center of the Karakum Desert in the late 1920s.
A special place in the publication is occupied by a photo chronicle of the famous 1933 "Moscow-Karakum-Moscow" rally, captured by Max Prekhner. This section features over 200 photographs, many of which are published for the first time.
