"The Sertãos: The War in Canudos" (1902) is a documentary account of the government's suppression of the 1897 uprising in northeastern Brazil. This civil conflict might have remained one of a series of socio-political upheavals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries if not for reporter Euclides da Cunha, who chronicled the final military campaign in Canudos. He transformed his writings for the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo into a work that went far beyond journalistic work, raising for the first time the question of Brazilian national identity. It is simultaneously a war novel and a historical, geographical, and anthropological essay on life in a remote region little known to Brazilians themselves. The novel was highly regarded by Stefan Zweig, Robert Lowell, and Mário Vargas Llosa, who based his work on "The Sertãos" on his book "The War at the End of the World." In his homeland, Euclides da Cunha's work became a classic of national literature and immortalized the name of its creator.
