Lyubov Vasilyevna Shaporina (1879-1967) was the founder of the first puppet theater in Soviet Russia, an artist, and a translator. Her diary, published for the first time, is a unique phenomenon among Russian diaries of the 20th century. It was kept from the 1920s to the 1960s and has no equal in terms of both its duration and thematic coverage (politics, economics, religion, everyday life in the city and village, the siege of Leningrad, political repressions, the activities of the NKVD, literary life, music, painting, theater, etc.), as well as in the sharpness of its critical attitude toward the Soviet government. The book reflects Shaporina’s close acquaintance with A. A. Akhmatova, A. P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva, N. S. Tikhonov, A. N. Tolstoy, D. D. Shostakovich, M. V. Yudina and many other famous contemporaries.
