The only completed novel and the largest work by French writer Alain-Fournier, who died at age 27 in the First World War. This iconic text about adolescence inspired John Fowles himself.

A shy and dreamy boy, François, meets the imaginative Augustin, nicknamed "Le Grand Meaulnes," at school. One day, the new boy disappears for two days, and upon his return, he tells an incredible story. It turns out that during his absence, he visited a mysterious village, where he met a girl named Yvonne and fell in love with her. François promises to help Augustin reunite with the beautiful woman. At François's request, the teenagers form an alliance: each will come to the aid of the other at the first call...

John Fowles called "Le Grand Meaulnes" the greatest novel in European literature about adolescence. Having read the novel in his school years, Fowles noted that it had a strong influence on him, and when he wrote his first novel, The Magus, he did not forget the writing experience of Alain-Fournier, who masterfully weaved reality and dreams.
