"Invitation to Execution" (1935) is the latest in a string of Nabokov's Berlin novels, a virtuoso intellectual bestseller whose title has become winged. In the bourgeois variety of the totalitarian state, the worst crime is exceptionalism. The notions of honor, poetry, and love are lost as a result of the long degradation of society, which has turned people into a faceless public. In a paradoxical way, the judgment in the novel is not on Cincinnatus C., whose entire guilt lies in the authenticity of his feelings and independence of his views, but on society itself, trapped in its illusory prosperity.
