Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelev (1873-1950) was a Russian writer and publicist, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. He was nicknamed the "Orthodox writer" for his numerous texts on Russian spirituality. While in exile, "not for a moment in his spiritual fervor did he cease to think of Russia and be tormented by its misfortunes."

The story "The Inexhaustible Chalice," written during incredibly difficult times for the author, is dominated by a feeling of spiritual joy that arises in the heart of a deeply religious person upon touching a sacred object. The life story of a pious artist offers an understanding of what it means to lead a truly humble life. Ilya Sharonov, the son of serfs born in a barnyard, discovered his artistic talent from an early age and, by the grace of his young master, was sent abroad to study painting. After some time, a longing for the past brings him back to his native land, where he is entrusted with painting the murals of a newly rebuilt church. Until his death, he lived righteously, bringing light with his brushstrokes.
One of his works, an icon of the Mother of God, continues to bring comfort and healing to those who suffer.
