It is widely believed that the now widespread conspiracy idea of a flat earth dates back to the unenlightened religious Middle Ages. It would have to wait for navigators like Columbus and Magellan, or astronomers like Copernicus and Galileo, for the darkness of the delusion to dissipate and the Earth to appear round. However, from the time of antiquity until the European Renaissance, the idea that the Earth was flat was virtually unheard of in the West. Violene Giacomotto-Sharra and Sylvie Noni set out to trace the history of the "flat-earth" delusion and understand how it came about. In the first part of the book, the authors propose to consult ancient sources, the Church Fathers and, above all, the textbooks and encyclopedias written and used for teaching during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The second part of the study is devoted to an examination of the myth itself and its genealogy in order to shed light on the reasons for the persistence of this misconception in spite of all the evidence. Violaine Giacomotto-Charra is Professor of the History of Science and Literature of the Renaissance at the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne. Sylvie Noni is a specialist in medieval Arabic physics and a researcher at the University of Paris Cité.
