There is a common belief that the currently widespread flat-earth conspiracy theory dates back to the unenlightened religious Middle Ages. It would have taken the sailors Columbus and Magellan, or the astronomers Copernicus and Galileo, for the darkness of the delusion to dissipate and for the Earth to be found to be round. However, from the times of antiquity until the European Renaissance, the idea that the Earth is flat was practically not widespread in the West. Violaine Giacomotto-Sciarrat and Sylvie Noni set out to trace the history of the “flat-earth” delusion and understand how it arose.
In the first part of the book, the authors suggest turning to ancient sources, the Church Fathers and, above all, textbooks and encyclopedias written and used for teaching in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The second part of the study is devoted to the study of the myth itself and its genealogy, with the aim of shedding light on the reasons for the persistence of this misconception in spite of all the evidence.
Violaine Giacomotto-Scharrat is a professor of the history of science and literature of the Renaissance at the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne. Sylvie Noni is a specialist in medieval Arabic physics and a researcher at the University of Paris Cité.
