Smolny Institute, opened by order of Catherine II, is the first women's educational institution in Russia, the purpose of which is "to give the state educated women, good mothers, useful members of the family and society." Over time, the nature of the institution changed, the institute became a closed privileged institution, behind whose beautiful façade hid a barracks regime, and the education consisted of mindless cramming.

In her memoir essay, Elizaveta Vodovozova describes the institute's customs without embellishment: the strictness of the class ladies, the traditional game of adoration, meager food and superficial study of subjects. She describes the educational reform of K. D. Ushinsky, which awakened in the young Smolensk girl an interest in acquiring new knowledge and completely turned upside down the idea of what education is.
