After graduating from high school, at the end of 1828 Nikolai Gogol goes to conquer St. Petersburg, having about it a rather romanticized idea. However, the capital opens before the young writer not only the front doors of luxurious mansions, but also its dark corners. Having got a job as a petty official, he actively writes, and during the years 1835-1842 "St. Petersburg stories" are born. Using his favorite techniques - humor, grotesque, mystical phenomena and borderline states - Gogol shows the life of ordinary Petersburgers and invented his "little man", who became iconic for all of Russian literature for centuries to come.
