An amazing, exceptionally heartfelt history of one of the most mysterious diseases in history - Alzheimer's disease. Its symptoms were first noted more than 100 years ago, and now, according to Joseph Jebelli, scientists are closer than ever to defeating it. Meanwhile, the disease has assumed epidemic proportions, affecting tens of millions of people around the world: according to rough estimates, a third of the living have a predisposition to the disease. The world's population is aging while scientists are diligently searching for an "antidote". And Joseph Jebelli, one of Britain's most prominent neuroscientists, is among them. His grandfather prematurely lost his memory and identity, and his loving grandson years later managed to write a book that was much needed - both the story of a dear man, and a scientific detective, telling about the puzzles that have to solve scientists in laboratories. Jebelli's quest begins in nineteenth-century Germany and postwar England, leading through the jungles of Papua New Guinea, Japan, America, India, and China to Iceland, Sweden, and Colombia. His heroes are scientists from around the world, as well as courageous patients and their families, who have turned perceptions of disease upside down.
Joseph Jebelli did his PhD in neurobiology at the Institute of Neuroscience at University College London. His research focuses on the cellular nature of Alzheimer's disease. He has written numerous scientific articles and popular articles for publications such as The Guardian and The Telegraph.
