The first volume of the most famous French novel of the twentieth century was published more than a hundred years ago - in November 1913. The novel was called "Towards Swann", and its author Marcel Proust then did not suspect that his brainchild would grow into a cycle of "In Search of Lost Time", on which the writer will work until the last hours of his life. "The Hermant Side" is the third volume of a seven-volume novel by Marcel Proust. If the first book, "Toward Swann," tells about the childhood of the protagonist and what was before his birth, the second, "Under the shadow of maidens crowned with flowers," is his adolescence, the collapse of the first love and the birth of a new one, then "Side of Hermantes" - it is youth. The narrator, conquered from a small age by the poetry of names, finally realizes the difference between the name of a man and this man himself, the name of a city and this city itself. He penetrates into the mysterious circle that has beckoned him since long ago, in other words, enters the society of the ancestral aristocracy, and as if by magic gains the gift of double vision, the gift of seeing ordinary, not without merit, but without mystery and sometimes so funny people - and not to lose contact with the mysterious, beautiful ancient and life-giving poetry hiding in their names. The reader will have to appreciate Elena Baevskaya's brilliant translation, which refutes the sadly established opinion that Proust is an honorable, intellectual, but boring author.
