In November 1913, the first volume of Marcel Proust's novel Swann's Way was published. The publication was made possible by the efforts of the unknown writer's friends, since the complexly constructed, autobiographical work initially failed to arouse enthusiasm among publishers, and subsequently among critics and readers. At that time, hardly anyone could have predicted that the cycle In Search of Lost Time, the first book of which would be Swann's Way, would eventually be called one of the most significant works of world literature of the 20th century. Each novel in the cycle is dedicated to a certain stage of life: Swann's Way tells about the protagonist's childhood and the events preceding his birth; Under the Shadow of Virgins Crowned with Flowers is about his adolescence, the collapse of his first love and the birth of a new one; Guermantes' Side is about his youth. "Sodom and Gomorrah" (the last of the novels in the cycle, published during the author's lifetime) inherits the themes and plot of "The Guermantes Side": it is a continuation of the story about the social successes of the young hero. There is also the theme of love and the hero's relationship with Albertine, referring to the book "Under the Shadow of Virgins Crowned with Flowers". The fourth novel in the cycle "In Search of Lost Time" following the previous three is offered to the reader in the translation of Elena Baevskaya, which refutes the sadly established opinion that Proust is a respectable, intellectual, but boring author.
