The publisher of this collection, German Dmitrievich Goppe (1836–1885), was a renowned Russian publisher and printer. In his youth, he learned the basics of book publishing in Europe and at M.O. Wolf's shop. G.D. Goppe's firm was considered one of the best printing houses in St. Petersburg, and he produced many beautifully designed books.
"Album of Russian Folk Tales and Epics" is a unique book commissioned by the royal family, specifically Empress Maria Alexandrovna, to whom the publication is dedicated. The album includes folk tales and epics, as well as several poetic adaptations by A.S. Pushkin and P.P. Ershov, based on folklore. Each of the 12 works in the album is accompanied by commentary, revealing the etymology of the names of mythical characters and providing valuable insights into the worldview of the ancient Slavs.
The book is illustrated with engravings by the remarkable artists I.I. Sokolov, N.I. Sokolov, V.M. Vasnetsov, I. Panov, and K. Brozh. Many of the illustrations were personally engraved by Academician L.A. Seryakov. The vignette illustrations were executed by K. Brozh and engraved by E. Dammüller.
This publication is a landmark of Russian book publishing in the second half of the 19th century, both in its content and execution technique. It includes well-known bylinas and fairy tales: "Ilya Muromets," "Svyatogor," "Sadko the Rich," "Koschei the Immortal," "The Tsar Maiden," "The Golden Fish," "The Firebird," "Bova the Prince," "The Dead Princess," "Yeruslan Lazarevich" ("Ruslan and Lyudmila"), "Dobrynya Nikitich," and "The Little Humpbacked Horse."
