The Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh legends compiled in the XII-XIII centuries, includes twelve stories. Some of them are based on reinterpreted plots of ancient Celtic mythology and once served as a manual for young bards (scholars speculate that the name of the collection comes from the Welsh mab - "young man"). Another part was created under the influence of European chivalric novels, which, in turn, were influenced by Celtic legends about King Arthur and his knights, Tristan and Isolde, and the Holy Grail. Adjoining the novels of the collection is the adventure story of the legendary bard Taliesin, who lived in the sixth century. Although the Mabinogion was discovered by European culture only in the 19th century, it had a great influence on it, contributing to the development of the genres of fantasy and the literary fairy tale.
