The book recounts the outstanding role of the holy and faithful Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky during an extremely difficult and tragic period for Ancient Rus'—the beginning of the Tatar invasion, the shift of the center of state life from south to north—the transition of Kievan Rus' to Suzdal Rus'.
The reader is presented with a glimpse into Alexander Nevsky's childhood, youth, and adulthood, his physical and mental makeup—the remarkable traits of a true defender of his homeland, a statesman, a warrior, and a powerful ruler.
The book is filled with descriptions of Alexander Nevsky's military campaigns with his army against the enemies of Ancient Rus' and his services to the Russian people of subsequent generations.
It was first published in Paris in 1927 by YMCA-Press. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus', it was republished in Moscow in 1993, and in 1999, it was published by the Preobrazhenie Public Library Foundation with a supplement in the "Russian Saints and Ascetics" series.
In 2013, the OSLN publishing house revived this story with the publication of N. A. Klepinin's book about Alexander Nevsky, certified "recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church."
The book's author, Nikolai Andreevich Klepinin, was repressed along with his wife in the city of Oryol and was rehabilitated in 1956. The author's complex and tragic life deserves the attention of contemporary Russian filmmakers, including screenwriters and directors.
