John Milton was born into the family of a London notary. After graduating from Cambridge and becoming fluent in ancient and modern languages, Milton became one of the most educated men of his time. He lived a tumultuous life, honoring scholarly pursuits, politics, and religion, but his name has endured through poetry, most notably the poem Paradise Lost, first published in 1667. This epic drama, comparable in scope to the works of Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare, has become one of the greatest works of English literature. In this edition, Paradise Lost is translated by Arkady Steinberg and accompanied by a full set of classic illustrations by Gustave Doré. The book also includes the poem "Paradise Returned", based on an episode from the New Testament about the temptation of Christ by Satan, the tragedy "Samson the Wrestler" and the best examples of Milton's lyrics. In addition to Doré's illustrations, the edition includes illustrations by William Harvey, George Wharton Edwards and Arthur Rackham (color engravings for the elegant pastoral "Komos"), never before published in Russia. The texts are accompanied by detailed notes by Andrei Nikolaevich Gorbunov, a prominent literary scholar and specialist in foreign literature.
