How did fashion penetrate the collections and expositions of museums? When and how did the first exhibitions devoted to costume appear? Canadian researcher Julia Petrov's book tells the story of twentieth-century fashion exhibitions, from the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1900 to Alexander McQueen's exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011. Relying on archival materials and scientific works on fashion and museum business, the author examines the ways of representing exhibits, conceptual foundations and strategies of forming the exhibition narrative, which were developed in the 19th century and have remained practically unchanged since then. The book, organized according to the thematic principle, can serve as a guide to the world of fashion exhibitions, which have been gaining popularity in recent years and help even skeptics to see in clothes an object worthy of academic research and representation in the museum space. Julia Petrov is a curator at the Royal Alberta Museum and a specialist in visual culture, fashion history and museum studies.
