The book by military historian N.D. Karpov tells about little-known events of the beginning of the Civil War in the South of Russia. At that rebellious time, along with revolutionary professionals to the leadership of the ubiquitously formed Red Guard detachments came people who were seized by the romance of armed struggle, the desire to realize their own ideas about how to improve the lives of ordinary people. In the center of the story - the commander-in-chief of the Red Army of the North Caucasus I.L.Sorokin - a bright, extraordinary and contradictory personality, with great potential as a talented commander. The triumph of his military activity was the defeat of the Volunteer Army of General Kornilov in April 1918, as well as a number of other successful combat operations. However, he entered the history of the Soviet period as an adventurer, a traitor to the revolution and an enemy of the people. Using archival and other sources, the author tried to prove the groundlessness of these claims.
