"I consider translating Mandelstam into German no less important than my own poetry," Paul Celan said, according to a contemporary. His translations are the result of slow, immersive reading, aimed at "perceiving the language and image" of the speaker, hearing the poet's language as his life and destiny through his own time and beyond time. Igor Bulatovsky's 2024–2025 adaptations of these translations engage Celan's poetry—and Mandelstam's—in a meditative, listening conversation through the "argumentativeness of time."
