The capture of the coastal bridgehead in Normandy became the most difficult and bloody stage of the Allied invasion of northwestern Europe, as Hitler's decision to hold the front line formed after the landing of Anglo-American troops at any cost forced them to fight in a specific landscape known as bocage, to which the soldiers and officers of the expeditionary forces were not ready either morally or physically. Only long six weeks of heavy bloody fighting and the development of special tactics allowed to overcome the stalemate and provide the conditions for the breakthrough of the Wehrmacht defense, the subsequent defeat of the Germans in France and the liberation of Paris.
The new book by leading Russian historians of the Battle of Normandy covers the events of the initial, June phase of the battle in Bocage, the main milestones of which were not justified by the capture of the port of Cherbourg and two unsuccessful attempts to seize the city of Caen - operations "Perch" and "Epsom". The authors pay special attention to the detailed analysis of the battle for Villers-Bocage on June 13, 1944, which became the "star hour" of the most famous German tank ace Michael Wittmann.
