The new book by Russian historian V.V. Pensky is devoted to a complex and controversial time in the history of the Russian state and the man who became a symbol of this time - Ivan the Terrible. The long reign of Ivan IV, in fact, summarized the stay of the Rurikovich dynasty at the top of power of the Russian political Olympus. The first Russian tsar has finished the business begun by his great-grandfather Basil II and grandfather Ivan III - gathering of the grounds and authority. He completed the building of the Russian "servant state", which was then repeatedly rebuilt, especially under Peter the Great, and existed until the second half of the XVIII century, when under Catherine II began its gradual dismantling. This process was complex and by no means straightforward - after the leap forward made under Ivan III, there was a lull under Vasily III, when both the country and the authorities seemed to be preparing, saving strength and energy before a new leap. The unexpected death of Vasily III postponed this process for some time. The author tells about the years of "boyar rule", which came after the death of his father Ivan IV, the period of "interregnum" and timelessness, when the personality and character of the future formidable tsar was formed, and how his path to power began. The author has included in his work numerous quotations from chronicles and letters from the time of Ivan the Terrible in order to convey the spirit of the era as best as possible.
