A book that refused to be published. It sat in the archives for almost 90 years. Turned the conventional wisdom about slavery upside down. In 1927, Cudjo Lewis of Alabama, known as the last surviving slave in the United States, received a visitor. It was Zora Neale Hurston, an aspiring anthropologist. She was working on her first big assignment and wanted to hear Cudjoe's account of his slavery, as well as learn how his life had turned out after his emancipation. In 1931, Hurston wrote a history of Cudjo Lewis. The manuscript was rejected by several publishers who felt that the Lewis dialect Hurston retained in her book was too difficult to read, but she refused to rewrite the text. For nearly 90 years, the manuscript sat in the archives of Howard University's library. In 2018, the book finally saw the light of day and won 13 book awards. Cudjoe's vibrant, strong, and distinctive "voice" has captured millions of hearts.
