In 1938, less than a year after the war between Japan and China, the Japanese public was shocked by the publication of a small book entitled "Wheat and Soldiers." The cover listed the author as Corporal Hino Ashihei. This book, from the perspective of a simple soldier, was not written in the quiet of a study but was written day after day on the battlefield. The author reveals what war is really like, with all its horrors. "Wheat and Soldiers" possesses the same epic character that made E.-M. Remarque's novel "All Quiet on the Western Front" a remarkable work about the First World War. "Wheat and Soldiers" became an overnight sensation in Japan, selling nearly half a million copies, even though only a few months had passed since its publication. It was then that Corporal Hino's real name was revealed: Katsunori Tamai (1907–1960). Readers knew him as the author of articles in literary magazines and a collection of short stories that included two short stories that later won the Akutagawa Prize, Japan's highest literary award.
