An academic edition of Thietmar von Merseburg's "Chronicle" has been published—a crucial historical source on the history of the Ottonian Empire and Central and Eastern Europe in the 10th and 11th centuries. This edition has a lifespan of over 80 years. A translation of the "Chronicle" was prepared in the 1930s by the distinguished philologist, historian, and archivist Sergei Alexandrovich Anninsky (1891–1942); however, the Great Patriotic War began, and the translation was never published.
S.A. Anninsky died during the first, most terrible, winter of the siege, during the evacuation from Leningrad. Anninsky's apartment was damaged in a bombing raid, and his typeset of the "Chronicle" was lost. Two typewritten copies remain (at the St. Petersburg Institute of History and the Institute of Russian History), known only to a select circle of specialists.
Over the course of five years, the compilers accomplished a colossal amount of work: they compared the translation with Thietmar's original manuscripts and all previous publications of this source, worked on two surviving typewritten copies of the translation, compiled a modern commentary, pieced together the life of S.A. Anninsky, supplied the publication with scholarly articles, and demonstrated that to this day, S.A. Anninsky's translation remains one of the most accurate translations of Thietmar of Merseburg's "Chronicle."
