Saint Ignatius (Bryanchaninov) (1807-1867) was a great Russian theologian and preacher, Orthodox spiritual writer, canonized in 1988. "Fatherland" was first published in 1870 after the blessed death of the saint under the title "Selected sayings of the holy monks and stories from their lives". For many years St. Ignatius collected and translated from Greek primary sources the lives of the ancient ascetics, continuing the enlightening work of St. Paisios Velichkovsky, the Optina elders, St. Theophanes the Hermit. Educated Russia, carried away by science and progress, risked to remain aloof from spiritual knowledge - if it were not for the works of the holy enlighteners, who returned the attention of those seeking truth to the great heritage of the ancient monastic tradition. "A careful reading of these sayings and tales brings upon the reader - as from paradise - from the first centuries of Christianity the fragrance of holy simplicity and true service to God, overshadowed abundantly by Divine grace... The sayings are brief and simple; the activity of the Fathers is the activity of babes about the Lord; but both the sayings and their activity have deep meaning and profound significance. They are precious as the fruits of holy experience, as the exact, pure expression of the will of God."

They are the fruits of holy experience, as the exact, pure expression of the will of God.
