Pavel Stelliferovsky is a candidate of philological sciences, publisher of educational literature, author of books and articles about Russian writers.
Russian writers have been writing this unusual novel for almost one hundred and fifty years. But never finished writing, because its main character all tried to slip away from the sharp writer's eye, changed color and, in the words of Saltykov-Shchedrin, silently crawled "from one period of history to another". Today, by re-reading the classics, we can recreate a completely unusual collective work, which has survived to us in excerpts, sketches and short chapters. Zagoretsky, Molchalin, Shprichikov, Chichikov, Glumov, Opiskin, Balalaikin, Tarelkin, Ochumelov, Nevzorov, Gulachkin, Podsekalnikov, Pobedonososikov, Momentalnikov... What unites these seemingly minor characters of great creations, are the opportunists and shifters of different times so inconspicuous and safe? No, no and no! They are from the same rotten root, this bad-smelling family has soiled the lives of many generations of decent people, and sometimes played a tragic role in their fate. Under the flag of well-meaning and obsequiousness, official deference, reconciliation and spiritual betrayal, these chameleons not only seek and find a warm place and a plate of soup, but also give rise to the evil of permissiveness and impunity. Ugryum-Burcheev, the Benefactor, the Elder Brother appear wherever and whenever they meet kneeling, silent performers, in whose eyes they read the eternal question "What do you want?". This book is about scoundrels in the Russian classical literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but the thoughtful reader has the right to multiply the despicable row, turning to the world classics and modern works. And should, in the opinion of the author of the book, look carefully around him. Is there not somewhere near any of the representatives of the chameleon family? Times and mores change, but these characters are resilient and successfully adapt to all changes, quietly and persistently declaring their appetites. Alas, our time also suits them very well....
