"The Handmaid's Tale" is a famous dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, which has been reprinted and translated into many languages many times. It ranks alongside such great works as "1984" by J. Orwell, "Brave New World" by O. Huxley and "Fahrenheit 451" by R. Bradbury.

After the government was overthrown, a new state was formed - the Republic of Gilead. All power belongs to the military, who established a cruel order. Art, theater and music are strictly prohibited. Women are deprived of absolutely all rights, even the ability to read and write.

Due to a man-made disaster, only some women are capable of reproducing offspring. They are called handmaids, they bear and give birth to children for their masters.

Offred is one of these handmaids. She once had a real name, but now it is forbidden. Like a treasure, she keeps this name and memories of her former life. And he knows for sure that someday he will be able to get it all back.
