The Afghan War marked a ten-year period in Soviet history, encompassing the most difficult periods of the Soviet state's history. Due to the classified nature of the archives, a large body of information remains obscured for historians. However, numerous sources exist that allow us to piece together a more or less coherent picture of what happened.

That war had far greater consequences than one might imagine. From the growth of global drug trafficking to the emergence of a fully-fledged political force – radical Islamism – many of the contradictions of the modern world have their roots in the military intervention of the Limited Contingent of Soviet Troops in Afghanistan.

This book was written to foster an understanding of what happened during that period and how it has impacted the present day.
