Saints Mark the Ascetic and Isaiah the Hermit lived in the Egyptian desert in the fourth century. It was a time of spiritual blossoming, when the depth of their understanding of God's path was expressed in words. According to Lavsaik, Saint Mark mastered the Holy Scriptures so well from a young age that he knew the Old and New Testaments by heart. The grace of the Holy Spirit, life's experiences, and study of God's word made him deeply versed in the mysteries of spiritual life. Without hiding this talent, he taught and wrote prolifically.

Blessed Isaiah was the abbot of the monastery and edified his brethren not only by word but also by deed. His writings are abundant streams of spiritual wisdom.

Both of these saints taught spiritual discernment and the development of the inner man. The importance of their writings is evidenced by the fact that both St. Paisius Velichkovsky and Saints Ignatius and Theophan translated these works for the edification of modern Orthodox readers. In our time, the explanations of the subtleties of spiritual life by Saints Isaiah the Hermit and Mark the Ascetic both protect us from error and properly guide us to the knowledge of God.
