"The Russian Golgotha" is one of the dramatic events in Russian history. Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus' called the infamous Butovo shooting range this name, as hundreds of Orthodox priests, monks, nuns, and parishioners perished there.

As a boy, Samuil was taken by a tsarist officer from a remote village in the Far North, exchanged for greyhound puppies, and brought to the Ryazan province. His life, up until a certain point, was quite happy: he graduated from high school, learned a profession and a job, married a priest's pretty daughter, and, upon retirement, became a priest himself. But he lived during a time of great change—revolutions, World War I and the Civil War, the collapse of the traditional way of life. The fate of Samuil Bubentsov is the fate of a reluctant saint, a small man who wanted to live and serve God and people.
